NWS Issues Red Flag Warning; Firefighters Prepare

Posted: Updated:
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for Monday. That warning indicates a high fire danger based on numerous conditions.

Meteorologist Mark Faucett with the NWS says there is a chance of dry lightning for parts of Northern Nevada, however, the real concern is low humidity and high winds.

Faucett says the Red Flag Warnings serve a couple functions including letting Northern Nevadans know of the fire danger, and to prepare fire fighters for the conditions.

“It lets the firefighters do whatever preparatory work they need to do before we get to a busy time,” he said.

At Truckee Meadows Fire Station 13, crews are prepared for the higher danger. They’re equipped with a few different fire units including a brush truck and a fire tender.

Battalion Chief Mike Heikka is expecting a busy year for wild land fire because of dry vegetation. He and his crews are taking extra precautions for tomorrow’s warning.

“Keep an eye to the sky (Monday) and watch for those thunderstorms,” Heikka told his crews. “When they build up, we tone up our volunteer fire departments and man their stations so we bring additional people on.”

Washoe County has 11 paid fire stations in addition to 13 volunteer departments.

The National Weather Service advices the following:

-          Don’t use fireworks or start a campfire

-          Stow trailer chains properly

-          Don’t drive over dry grass

-          Postpone target shooting

-          Avoid yard work or welding near dry vegetation
