Nevada to Accept Medical Marijuana Applications Through August 18

Posted: Updated:
Today is the first day people can apply for permits to open medical marijuana establishments in Nevada. And state officials are expecting hundreds of applications.

The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health will accept applications through August 18. There are four types—dispensaries, cultivation facilities, production facilities for infused or edible products and labs.

It's a pretty rigorous process before the state will grant them approval, but they still expect as many as 500 applications. "We are prepared for as many applications as we receive, and we are anticipating receiving applications throughout the whole time,” says Dr. Tracey Green, Chief Medical Officer, Nevada DPBH.

As of Tuesday’s morning's press conference, the Nevada DPBH had already received more than a dozen applications. Once they're all in, review panels will go over the applications and assign them point values.

Businesses will be graded on factors like financial backing, business experience and plans for security and transportation.

And each type of facility has a different set of requirements. "For example, if it's a cultivator, how they're going to keep it from being directly observed, what is going to be their process for seed-to-sale tracking, everything needs to be tracked throughout the system."

The review panels will have the final points rankings for the applications done by November 3rd.

From there the businesses will work with counties and local municipalities for licensing and permits.
