Local Reaction to Secretary Shinseki's Resignation

Posted: Updated:
Eric Shinseki is out of a job tonight. The embattled Secretary of Veteran Affairs turned in his resignation today President Obama accepted it with respect but with understanding.

Meantime reaction from Nevada's Senators was a bit mixed. While Senator Reid has defended Shinseki and has pushed to give him a chance to fix things, he did release a statement today saying in part, "This is a good first step. It is now time to restore veterans' trust in the reliability of the care they are receiving from the VA."

And Senator Dean Heller has made no secret of his push to see a change of guard.

In a committee hearing in Washington, D.C. last week, Heller asked the Secretary point blank:" Can you give me one reason you shouldn't resign?"

At the time Shinseki replied, "I have done some good things and we are just not done yet."

Today, Senator Heller released a statement as well:

"It is time that veterans Nevad andNevadass the country deserve the best this nation has to offer. And they are entitled to a VA system that delivers the benefits that they earned."

Locally Darin Farr at the Reno VA Hospital says while Shinseki is taking the fall he has actually done some good things while he's been in charge.

"I have met Secretary Shinseki myself and he has done some good things. Including the patient aligned care teams that have really streamlined care at all of the VA Hospitals. And the programs to help homeless vets have all come under his leadership."

For now Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson has been appointed as the acting Secretary of the VA.
