Free Speech Screening for Kids

Posted: Updated:
Second grader, Lucy, is working on spelling and reading at Sierra Therapy Group. She's using the LIPS program to help her understand which letters make which sounds.

Shawna Ross is a certified speech pathologist for kids. She says it's important to catch speech problems early and get them corrected right away.

"At age 2 we expect kids to be saying at least 50 words and stringing to put together little sentences. 50 percent of kids who at the age of 2 who are classified as late talkers or who have slow expressive language development, 50 percent of those kids will go on to have learning disabilities."

This Saturday, May 31st, Sierra Therapy Group is hosting its 7th annual free screening. They're working with the UNR speech & hearing department to offer screenings for children between the ages of 3-6. They will be assessing speech-language, hearing, and fine-motor skills.

Lucy says because of all her hard work, she now has two new favorite subjects in school. "Spelling and reading because spelling sometimes has really fun activities for you to do and it's really really fun."

The screening will be at Sierra Therapy Group which is located at 9520 Prototype Ct. in south Reno.  You do need an appointment.  To make one, call 775-852-6323 and for more information go online at www.sierratherapygroup.com
