Local Artist Creates Image for Postal Stamp

Posted: Updated:
Two and a half years ago, Reno artist Ron Spears was commissioned to create the stamp illustration that will commemorate Nevada's sesquicentennial

“I'm on top of the world to be able to share this with my family and friends here in Nevada, just means the world to me”

This image of  Valley of Fire State Park in Southern Nevada will now grace the front of an official US Postage Stamp.  The original is an oil on canvas,  painstakingly created by Spears- a process he began on location

“I went down there, before sun rise, so i could see the sun rise then you have about five minutes to catch that light, and I did, in a photograph -  then did some sketches”

The sketches were reviewed until a final design was approved....And picking just one image to represent the state of Nevada was a challenge

“It's our oldest state park, that's important it's for everybody to share and I think that's a great gift”

A gift that Spears hopes more people are inspired to enjoy when they buy the 49 cent piece of state history

“They see Vegas and they see Reno, but they don't see some of the other areas that are so gorgeous, absolutely beautiful and I hope they see that and say maybe I  want to go there”

The new sesquicentennial commemorative stamp will be officially unveiled Wednesday, May 28th in Las Vegas.
