Thousands Spend Memorial Day Weekend Hanging Out At Lake Tahoe

Posted: Updated:
As we wrap up Memorial Day Weekend, we found a lot of people took the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine at Lake Tahoe.

Whether they're at Camp Richardson Resort in South Lake Tahoe or going for a swim in the lake, the area was packed with thousands of people over the weekend, and that gives the local businesses a reason to look forward to a very productive summer.

"We're having a very solid start," said Bob Hassett, Owner of Camp Richardson. "A great start to the season. The numbers are looking really good."

The resort was busy all weekend long as people took out their boats, jet skis and paddleboards. We even found a few people camping out there and making a vacation out of it.

Over at Sonney's BBQ Shack (787 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe), they've been flooded by the surrounding beach-goers this weekend.

"More people than we've even imagined," said Cathey Bervid, the restaurant's owner and manager. "It's been amazing with the wonderful local support. A lot of people from out of the area just enjoying the sun, enjoying the music, enjoying the food."

She told us they've sold out of their top sellers all weekend like the St. Louis Pork Ribs. In fact, it was so busy that they're already planning for next year.

"We're going to be double-staffed, double-ribbed."

While it was a time to hang out with family and friends, it's also a time to honor and remember our veterans.

"My father fought in World War II," said Rick DeFressine of Meyers, California. "He went into the coast guard in 1940, served for 24 years. We have to keep in mind, the reason we can be out here and do this really has a lot to do with all the people that fought for our country."
