Remembering Fallen Heroes in Fernley

Posted: Updated:
The Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley hosts of one of the largest gatherings on Memorial Day in Northern Nevada.

"It's easy to say thank you to a person who can say 'you're welcome.' But to say thank you to those who are no longer with us; to quietly acknowledge those who gave everything for their nation, that's pretty special," says Kat Miller.

Thomas Lakey served in Vietnam. "We want people to understand that we didn't ask to go to war. We didn't ask to kill other people. But we're there because our country asked and we're all patriots."

Vaudine Stephenson placed roses on her husband's grave.  He served in the Army during World War II. "He was a cook and he carried his kitchen with him everywhere."

Doyle "Jack" Stephenson died two years ago. He planted the rose bushes himself. "He re-landscaped the yard and he planted the roses and they're just a mass of blooms everywhere."

This is where people come to remember and to remind others not to forget thosewho sacrificeddd for their country.

"Why are you here today? You could be at the beach or doing something else."

"I'm here just to remember the fallen soldiers that have protected and make America what it is today," says Cody Young.

Guest speakers today included Senator Dean Heller, retired Major General Cindy Kirkland and Director of Military and Veterans Policies, Caleb Cage.
