Spanish Springs High School Celebrates Diversity Week
On Friday, Students at Spanish Springs High School got a visit from a speaker with a touching story to tell.
This week Spanish Springs is holding its annual Multicultural Festival to celebrate all types of people. And today's speaker had a personal story to share about what it's like growing up as a homeless teenager.
"I shared with them the lessons I learned on the street, and how it led me to understand that education was going to be my only way out."
Roy Jarez Jr. shared stories of how domestic abuse led to him leave home at age 14. He spoke about what it was like grow up on the streets and some of the inspirational people he met along the way. Through his struggles he learned to value knowledge and realized that with hard work his past didn't have to define him.
This assembly caps off a whole week of events, including student-made videos and different types of musical performances. "I want my students to understand that the power in our nation, especially in our society, is our diversity," says Jay Salter, Spanish Springs Assistant Principal
This is the fourth year that Spanish Springs has put on this Multicultural Festival.
