Sheriff's Office Sees Surge in Burglaries Involving Unlocked Vehicles

Posted: Updated:
From the Washoe County Sheriff's Office:

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public today of an increase in burglaries involving unlocked vehicles in the North Valleys and Galena areas.

During the past week, several vehicle burglaries were reported from residents living in the cul-de-sacs along Beckwourth Drive, south of Golden Valley Road. The Sheriff’s office is also investigating a number of vehicle burglaries reported in the area of Galena High School near Mt. Rose Highway.

All these burglaries involved vehicles that were left unlocked.

The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating these burglaries. In keeping with the Sheriff's Office Area Crime Enforcement System (ACES) strategy, which uses real-time data and information to determine how to best use resources and tactics, the Sheriff's Office response to this emerging trend also includes reminding residents throughout the area of steps they can take to prevent vehicle burglaries in the hopes of preventing future crimes of this nature.

Last October, the Sheriff’s Office launched the “Take ConTRoL” campaign which focuses information that will help keep vehicles and their valuables safe.

The key messages of the Take ConTRoL campaign are:

C – Clean it Out: remove valuables from your vehicle

T – Take your keys with you. Never leave your car running

R – Report suspicious activity or crimes to the proper authorities as soon as possible

L – Lock your doors every time. Sheriff’s Office statistics show that 75 percent of this year’s vehicle burglaries involved vehicles that were left unlocked

Washoe County residents may learn more about personal safety by visiting the “Staying Safe” page at WashoeSheriff.com.
