Aces Shut Out Tacoma Tuesday

One night after being shut out by the Rainiers, the Aces returned the favor, blanking Tacoma 7-0 Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium.

Aces starter Zeke Spruill limited the Rainiers to just four hits over six innings and struck out five. Relievers Kevin Munson and Jess Todd finished the job as they combined to retire nine of the final ten batters Tacoma sent to the plate.

Reno jumped on Tacoma starter James Gillheeney right off the bat as the first five batters of the game singled. The Aces ran into an out on the bases before Gillheeney retired anybody. Didi Gregorius and Nick Ahmed had back-to-back knocks to start the game. Gregorius tried to score from second on Nick Evans’ base hit to left, but Xavier Avery threw him out at the plate for the first out of the game.

Mike Jacobs followed Evans with a single of his own, this time plating Ahmed to give Reno a 1-0 lead.

The Aces’ cleanup hitter was back at it again in the second. With two outs and the bases loaded, he sent a 2-1 pitch from Gillheeney just inside the right-field foul pole for a grand slam to put Reno in front 5-0. It’s the first grand slam by an Aces player this year.

That was more than enough for Spruill who was never threatened. Tacoma put more than one runner on in an inning just once. He retired Avery on a fielder’s choice with two on and two out to end the fourth inning.

The two teams play game three of the four-game set Wednesday morning in Tacoma. Reno send right-hander Mike Bolsinger (2-0, 2.38) to the mound while Tacoma counters with right-hander Andrew Carraway (2-2, 5.40). First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 a.m.
