Hunter Falls Fire Burns 760 Acres, Now 47% Contained

Fire crews with the U.S. Forest Service are currently trying to put out a wildfire that is burning west of Reno near Caughlin Ranch.

Sierra Front Fire Agency tells us the Hunter Falls Fire is approximately 760 acres in size and is now 47% contained as of Monday evening.

The blaze is primarily burning in the Mt. Rose Wilderness Area, moving northeast in the Hunter Creek drainage.

The fire started late Saturday night but crews didn't start fighting it until Sunday morning -- for safety reasons. "They look at the area where the fire is, they look at the terrain, they look at the access issues, and they make informed decisions," says Elayn Briggs of Sierra Front.

Search and Rescue teams with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office evacuated hikers who were hiking in the Michael Thompson Trail. Once crews evacuated everyone, they closed the trail until further notice. Violators could face a $5,000 fine and up to six months in jail.

No homes or structures are threatened at this time. Authorities tell us it's likely human-caused.

Although the current air quality index is in the Good range and forecasted air quality indices for today and tomorrow are in the moderate ranges, areas near and downwind of the Hunter Falls Fire may experience elevated levels of fine particulates. If you see or smell smoke, stay indoors with the windows closed and air conditioning on and reduce activity. "We found out last year during the American Fire and Rim Fire, that it doesn't take very much for the smoke to get blown into our basin," says Phillip Ulibarri of the Washoe County Health District. There is no information yet as to how the fire started.
