Virginia City Highlands Prepares for Fire

Posted: Updated:
Fire season is here, and with another year of drought conditions, fire fighters are preparing for the worst. That’s one reason why Storey County Emergency Management held an evacuation drill Saturday for residents of Virginia City Highlands.

The area is known for its rugged-like terrain atop Geiger Summit just south of Virginia City. The land is saturated with sagebrush, and junipers, or in other words, things that can easily ignite.

“Clear some of those areas so that the embers won’t be able to spread quite so rapidly,” said Joe Curtis, Director of Storey County Emergency Management.

Saturday’s drill included reverse 911 calls, door-to-door notification, and a mock evacuation center inside of Virginia City Middle School.

“Because we have so many nice trees, there’s a huge fire risk,” said Highlands resident John Lloyd. “It doesn’t take much for a spark to ignite, and suddenly we have a big problem on hand.”

Director of Washoe County Animal Services, Barry Brode says evacuees should always take extra steps to keep their pets stress-free. These tips include bringing a water bowl, food, medicine, and even a blanket.
