A valiant rally by the Aces came up short in the bottom of the ninth as Salt Lake topped Reno, 5-4, Friday night at Aces Ballpark to snap an 11-game losing streak.
Trailing 5-2 heading into the last of the ninth, first baseman Nick Evans led off with a towering triple to right-center. Evans scored to make it 5-3 when Mike Jacobs followed with a sacrifice fly.
Andy Marte struck out looking for the second out in the inning but the rally continued as Roger Kieschnick lined a double to left-center. Bees Manager Keith Johnson turned to Cory Rasmus out of the bullpen and he promptly walked Aaron Cunningham.
The next batter Blake Lalli knocked a run-scoring single up the middle to bring the Aces within one at 5-4. The rally fell short when Nick Ahmed flied out to center with runners at the corners.
Reno held a one-run lead throughout most the game as starter Mike Bolsinger and reliever Eury De La Rosa held the Bees to just one run over six innings.
It went south when Salt Lake got the best of Kevin Munson in the seventh. The right-hander allowed back-to-back singles to start the frame then overthrew first on a sacrifice bunt which allowed Salt Lake to knot the game at 2-2.
Taylor Lindsey followed with an infield single that scored Shawn O’Malley to give Salt Lake the lead. Two batters later Brennan Boesch drove in a pair of runs with a two-run triple.
The loss was the first for the Aces when leading after six innings. They were previously 18-0.
The series continues Saturday when Reno turns to right-hander Lucas Harrell (1-0, 3.94) who goes against Salt Lake right-hander Jarrett Grube (2-1, 3.95). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
