Zeke Spruill pitched into the eighth inning and led the Reno Aces to a 5-2 victory over the Salt Lake Bees in the series opener at Aces Ballpark Thursday afternoon.

Spruill went 7.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits to earn his first win of the season. He also struck out four batters and walked one.

Salt Lake got on the board first in the second inning when Brennan Boesch doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an error during the next at-bat.

The Aces tied it up in the third when Aaron Cunningham scored on a bases loaded ground out to first base.

The tie only lasted until the next half inning. Luis Martinez reached first base on a fielder’s choice. The next batter, Drew Heid, tripled to deep center field to score Martinez from first.

Reno tied the game in the fifth inning and took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Andy Marte homered to left field to lead off the inning. It was Marte’s 150th home run of his minor league career.

The Aces added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI singles from Aaron Cunningham and Nick Ahmed. Matt Stites came on in the ninth and earned his second save of the season.

Marte finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Didi Gregorius went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Mike Jacobs and Cunningham each finished with two hits.

The teams will play again tomorrow night at Aces Ballpark with RHP Mike Bolsinger (2-0, 2.55) scheduled to start for Reno and LHP Wade LeBlanc (3-1, 4.66) on the bump for Salt Lake. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
