Annual Reno Rodeo Gets Underway Next Month

Posted: Updated:
The Reno Rodeo is just around the corner and some big plans are in the works for this year's events. You can expect everything from bull riding, mutton-busting and so much more. It costs around $2 to $2.5 million to put on the rodeo, but a lot of that money comes back into our community for a great cause.

On Thursday morning the Reno Rodeo hosted a kick-off luncheon, getting ready for next month's 10-day rodeo. About 400 volunteers help put on the big show. Bill Bertelson is the rodeo president, he's been in the rodeo business for over 20 years and says this year's event is going to be huge. "It's a big business, this isn't your hometown rodeo," said Bertelson.

It's not only a very fun event for the whole family, but part of the proceeds also go to charity. "The proceeds for the rodeo come to our foundation as we distribute those to children with extraordinary needs through scholarships, community grants, our Reno Rodeo Denim Drive," said Marie Baxter of the Reno Rodeo Foundation.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars goes back to the Reno Rodeo Foundation from ticket sales, food, drinks, events and private donations. "On average, we help about 20,000 to 25,000 children annually in 13 different counties," said Baxter.

Get your cowboy stuff ready because the Reno Rodeo starts June 19th and goes until June 28th.  Around 100,000 visitors are expected to come through this arena this year.
