New Whitney Peak Hotel Preview

Posted: Updated:
For years, the old Fitzgerald building downtown sat vacant, but now Whitney Peak Hotel is just days away from opening and giving new life to the property. We got a behind the scenes look at the hotel this week and there's nothing like it place in Reno. The developers say that's why it's going to draw lots more customers.

In the next few weeks the restaurant will be filled with guests, the rooms will be filled and the concert venue will have close to 1,000 people inside. Whitney Peak is 16 stories high, six of those are being renovated with 157 new guest rooms. In addition there will be a new lobby, Heritage Restaurant, climbing gym, concert venue and executive offices. Project Manager, Niki Gross says it's going to be one of the few non-casino, non-smoking hotels in Reno. "We wanted to bring the outside in, really celebrate Northern Nevada and all of the region's offerings," said Gross.

With the new look --- the hotel is expecting a big draw from the Lake Tahoe area. "I think that's a very specific type of demographic. Active lifestyle type of people, well-traveled, well cultured people," said Gross.

It's taken a while to get to this point, the overall duration is about five months. "It's been a lot of fun just breathing new life into this idle building," said Cary Richardson, the Vice President of Miles Construction. "Things are going great. We're in the home stretch as you can see and we're very excited for the upcoming grand opening," said Richardson.

The hotel is already grabbing lots of attention. It's already completely sold out for Memorial Day Weekend. "It was crazy. So we released our inventory and in two days we were sold out and we just said well we definitely need to be ready now," said Gross. "The economy is there, the demand is there and things are looking up in that regard."

Whitney Peak Hotel is having a soft opening this weekend on Saturday starting at 7:00 p.m. There's going to be a free concert hosting a bunch of local bands. The grand opening of the hotel will be on June 7th.

The hotel could also expand renovations for rooms on the fifth through tenth floor, for a total of 326 guest rooms in the entire building. That decision will be made in the fall depending on how business goes until then.
