New Area Boys & Girls Club Prepares for Unveiling

Posted: Updated:
The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows serves about 12,000 in northern Nevada, but they need more resources, so they are celebrating a new facility they say will reach thousands more children in our area.

The Boys and Girls Club broke ground on the new facility about a year ago and Tuesday it will officially open.

Mike Wurm, the executive director for the Boys & Girls Club, said the building is strategically located off Foster Drive, across from Reno High School. "We did our demographic studies, 40% affluency - 40% of poverty. It's definitely an area that could use a Boys & Girls Club."

The new William N. Pennington Boys & Girls Club comes with a $14 million price tag, all paid for through various donations. It's a 50,000 square-foot building with a massive cafeteria. Wurm said the cafeteria will serve a quarter of a million meals a year.

He said the place is kid heaven. There's an art room and a learning center filled with computers. Also, he said there's a really cool feature called a water wall that kids can get creative on. "There's a tech room, even a green room in there, so the teens can make videos and make music. We're really trying to strike the chord on what the teens out there are wanting to do. We have a large gymnasium; 18,000 square-foot gymnasium with four youth size courts and two adult size courts."

You can watch the entire interview this weekend on Face the State. The show airs Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is Tuesday at 11 a.m. Everybody is welcome.
