Fracking/Earthquake Connection Investigated

Posted: Updated:
After an extremely rare 4.0 earthquake hit near Youngstown, Ohio 3 years ago, state geologists have now confirmed a probable link between fracking and earthquakes. It's a discovery that has implications for Nevada too.

75-year-old Richard Grimm says he reluctantly agreed to lease his Ohio land to an energy company for fracking. Now he's feeling the quakes.
"A little bit of trembling in the house, pictures shaking in the house."

State scientists in Ohio are now making a direct link between fracking and earthquakes. The drilling process for gas and oil shoots a mix of water, sand and other chemicals into rock a mile or more underground. Researchers recorded more than 100 mild quakes in Ohio since they began looking into this 15 years ago. "It's important to figure out where exactly in the earth these earthquakes occurred and how is it related to the fracking," says Dr. Raymond Beiersdorfer of Youngstown State University

But many see fracking as a boost for an economy, that struggled after the steel mills closed. Industry spokesman Mike Chadsey believes the drilling is still in the state's best interest. "This is a powerful thing in the state of Ohio. It's changing a lot of lives, it's saving a lot families, a lot of businesses. Slowing it down is certainly something we want to watch."

It's been a concern here in Nevada too. Dawn Harris of Frack Free Nevada is spreading awareness about hydraulic fracturing in the Silver State. "I want them to find out what's valid. What the truth is. There's a lot of conflicting information out there."

Noble Energy is the first oil company to start fracking in Nevada. This March they did their first drill in Elko County.

Back in Ohio, Grimm says he'd gladly give back the money he received from the energy company. "In a heartbeat. Because it's not worth it, it's absolutely not worth it.

All he wants now, is to keep his land from quaking.
