WCSD Students, Staff Celebrate 'Bike to School Week'
From the Washoe County School District:
Hundreds of students and staff members from the Washoe County School District (WCSD) are participating in the annual National Bike to Work, School, and Fun Week from May 10-16. Students are encouraged to wear their safety gear while traveling to and from school on their bicycles. This is the third annual celebration for WCSD, and 12 schools are expected to take part in the festivities this year.
“It’s so important to encourage healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and safe practices for our students,” said WCSD School Police Officer MJ Cloud, who organized this year’s events. “Now is the time to establish those healthy habits for our kids, and this celebration is a great way to get that effort started. The spring weather is perfect for activities like these, and we want our students to know how much fun it is to spend time outdoors with their families and friends.”
This year, events include the Mayoral Challenge Ride, a pancake feed, a Ride for Reading Book Drive, and the “Rack ‘Em Up” school bike contest where schools will divide $3,000 in prize money for having the best decorated bike rack and the fullest bike racks. The cities of Reno and Sparks, the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance, the Washoe County Health District Air Quality Management Division, and the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum are all participating in this year’s events.
“We are grateful to our community leaders and parents for supporting this effort,” said Officer Cloud. “This is truly a community partnership, and we are proud to bring it to our students and staff once again this year.”
