Keeping Truckee Meadows Beautiful, One 'Nevadan' at a Time

Posted: Updated:
Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful spent Saturday keeping our area beautiful. It was all part of their Great Community Cleanup.

Hundreds of volunteers collected about 100 tons of trash at 22 local sites, but one volunteer stands out.

Pat Kleames has been volunteering with K.T.M.B for the last six years. Prior to that, he served as a Reno Firefighter for 32 years.
Originally, he is from California. Today, though, he’s committed to keeping our area clean.

“We want to keep our Nevada as clean as we can,” said Kleames. “That’s one of my favorite subjects. We want this clean out here for our kids and grand kids.”

He and about 150 other volunteers spent Saturday collecting litter, tires, mattresses, couches, and even a shopping cart. K.T.M.B has been doing this clean up since 2006, and their work is definitely noticeable.

“It’s been wonderful,” he said. “These spots are looking more natural again.”

“Pat Kleames actually acts as a full time, unpaid river ranger in our community,” said Christi Cakiroglu, executive director of KTMB. “He’s just an amazing volunteer.”

She says that position was eliminated by the city of Reno as part of budget cuts years ago.

But despite the praise, Kleames remains humble.

“I’m just a worker bee for them,” he said. “But they do one heck of a job for us.”
