Experts Predict Low Voter Turn out in Primary

Posted: Updated:
There are a lot of candidates on the upcoming primary ballot. There are a lot of options for voters and there are a lot of races to be honed down for the general election. But will that be enough to bring voters out to the polls on June 10th? Political analysts say, probably not.

"In a presidential election or even when there is a contentious race for a top state office like Governor, voters get involved and they feel like there is a lot at stake and that their vote counts. In this election the Governor's race is a shoo-in with no real competition and Congressional races are pretty safe. And if the Lieutenant Governor's race is the headline race, that probably won't get people motivated," Eric Herzik is a Professor of Political Science at UNR.

He says with a large field of candidates like the 18 running for Reno Mayor, name recognition counts.

"Not only do candidates need to get people to the polls, they need to make sure those voters remember their names when they get there," Herzik says.

And he says it's the actual campaigning part of the campaign that will get mailers to the voters and get those voters to the polls.

"It will come down to which candidates and which groups can actually get their voters into the voting booth," Herzik says.
