The Tacoma Rainiers beat the Reno Aces, 4-3 Wednesday night at Aces Ballpark, thanks to a go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning with two outs.
Tacoma’s run came when Nick Franklin singled to right and moved to second on a groundout. After a line out to right field, Franklin scored from second during the next at-bat on a ball that got away from Aces catcher Blake Lalli.
Tacoma opened the scoring with a run in each of the first three innings. Chris Taylor led off the game with a triple to right and scored on a groundout to short. It was the third-straight game that the opponents’ leadoff batter had scored in the first inning against the Aces.
Jabari Blash and Franklin hit solo home runs in the second and third innings, respectively, to make the score 3-1.
Reno tied the game in the fifth inning with RBI singles from Aaron Cunningham and Mike Jacobs, but couldn’t scratch across another run to take the lead despite having the bases loaded with no outs.
After Franklin scored for Tacoma in the top of the ninth, Nick Evans hit a single in the bottom half with one out to put the tying run on base. Logan Bawcom closed the door from there, though, to earn his fourth save of the year.
Reno will look to get its first win of the series tomorrow night when the same teams meet at 6:35 at Aces Ballpark. RHP Zeke Spruill (0-1, 5.50) will start for the Aces and RHP Zach Miner (0-1, 9.00) will go for the Rainiers.
