Reno Council Considers Medical Marijuana Ordinances

Posted: Updated:
The Reno City Council is discussing the issue of licensing medical marijuana establishments at its meeting. This comes after Washoe County and the City of Sparks have taken steps forward in licensing those businesses.

The meeting is still going on, but the planning commission has made its recommendation to the city council that it moves forward and approves medical marijuana establishments within city limits. But there's still a lot of discussion that has to happen before it can be officially approved.

"We are going through our public process to hear from our city council and the planning commissioners and the general public about whether med marijuana establishments can be allowed within the city of Reno," says community development director Fred Turnier.

You may remember medical marijuana was legalized in Nevada back in 2000 but it wasn't until last year's legislative session that it was legal to sell it in Nevada. Now each county and city has to decide whether to issue licenses for cultivation facilities and dispensaries to open in their jurisdictions.

At today's meeting the committee laid out the stipulations for medical marijuana establishments like a 300 foot buffer between any residential areas. And all the Reno residents who spoke during public comment did advocate for making these establishments legal.

"We have received a wide variety of feedback from the community from we should allow it to we should not allow it."

The issue will be back up for discussion on May 28th - and then up for a vote on June 11.
