Too Many Reno Mayoral Candidates May Keep Some Voters Away

Posted: Updated:
It seems that the number of candidates in the race for Reno Mayor is making more headlines than any of the candidates themselves. And political analysts say that while so many options can be good for voters, it could also keep some voters away.

"This is the result of term limits," says TMCC Political Science Professor Fred Lokken. "It opens up opportunity and a lot of folks want to get involved. Some truly believe they have the answer to leading the city and other are opportunists. It doesn't cost that much money to file and for some it is a lark. Of course those candidates will be weeded out when voters realize they don't have any depth of understanding on the issues."

Lokken also says that while so many candidates offers a lot of options for voters, it can also be overwhelming.

"My hat's off that they tried the debate. But because there were so many people involved no one had time to really talk about any of the issues. Really everything was reduced to soundbites and 30 second time limits. But there really is no format to get to know candidates that will work for so many candidates at once," Lokken said.

Here at Channel 2 we are working to compile information on the candidates and their stance on the issues and will be posting them online to give you the option of  reading them at your leisure and we'll let you know when they are posted.
