Many of us have probably heard that taking an aspirin a day could help prevent a heart attack. But a new decision by the FDA suggests it might not be that simple.

Aspirin-maker Bayer had asked the FDA to allow the company to put on its bottles that aspirin can help prevent heart attacks. But the FDA says it doesn't believe aspirin prevents a first heart attack.

If someone already had a heart attack or stroke, or has a known history of heart disease then the FDA says a daily dose of aspirin can serve as a preventative measure.

The FDA says you should speak to your doctor before taking aspirin daily to weigh the benefits versus the risks.
