LearnZillion, a national organization dedicated to helping teachers learn innovative new ways to teach curriculum from the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), has named Washoe County School District (WCSD) educators Jodie Westmont and Chris Hayes to its national “Dream Team” of extraordinary teachers.
This group of teachers represents a diverse and dynamic group of education experts from across the country who are developing creative new ways to teach CCSS to their students. In the process, they also collaborate, create, and share high-quality resources with other districts and teachers who are also teaching the standards to their students.
Westmont, who teaches at Mount Rose Elementary School, and Hayes, who works in the Department of Professional Development, have helped implement the Nevada Academic Content Standards—which are based upon CCSS—in WCSD. The District has received national awards and recognition for its creative, cost-effective approach to teaching and learning the standards in its schools.
“We are so proud of our outstanding teachers, and we applaud Jodie and Chris for their hard work in bringing the Nevada Academic Content Standards to our students,” said Scott Bailey, chief academic officer for WCSD. ”I can think of a “zillion” ways that these two teachers have positively impacted teaching and learning in the Washoe County School District. We now share with the nation all that is good about their professional practice. On behalf of the creative, innovative, and dedicated staff of the Washoe County School District, we celebrate their accomplishments.”
“Jodie and Chris have found creative ways to make sure all of the students they work with are successful with these new outcomes.” said Aaron Grossman, who is a WCSD teacher on special assignment to train other educators who are implementing the standards. “They are ensuring that our students are afforded opportunities to practice reading and writing in a way that the standards demand.”
LearnZillion offers resources in math and English language for grades 2-12, developed by expert teachers directly from Common Core State Standards. The lessons are available free to thousands of teachers across the United States.
“I am honored to be chosen by LearnZillion for this opportunity,” said Hayes. “I look forward to collaborating with other professionals across the country to create quality lessons and resources aligned with the Common Core State Standards.”
“LearnZillion is a great tool for students, teachers, and parents,” said Westmont. “It is such an honor to be a part of this team. I am incredibly excited to be working and learning with educators from across the country.”
“Being named to the Dream Team of educators is a great honor, and we are happy to see two of our own teachers included in such prestigious company,” said Grossman. “This truly is a testament to their efforts to make sure our students are college and career ready.” From the Washoe County School District
