More Foster Parents Needed in Washoe County

Posted: Updated:
More kids are being pulled out of their homes and placed in foster care. Right now there's not enough foster homes to place children in Washoe County. Kids Kottage is a shelter that houses abused and neglected children who have been taken away from their parents or guardians. Right now it is the only shelter in town and it is at maximum capacity. Now Washoe County is asking for your help to free up some space. "It's amazing. It's a bumpy road sometimes, but it's great," said foster parent Kim Stevens.

Kim Stevens has been fostering children for nearly 20 years. She's just one foster parent out of the hundreds in Washoe County who has as many kids as their home allows. Lately there's been an influx. "In just calls from the community, our phone calls into what what we call 'intake' have been up. Our investigations are up and our removals are up," said Social Services Supervisory Stacey Jones.

Right now there are 615 children in family foster care alone, and even more are placed in relative care and treatment foster care. Across town Lisa Rogers is also a foster parent, fostering 25 kids herself over the years. She says it's not always easy... but it's worth it. "You have to open your home up to kids and to help fostering relationships with parents and outside agencies," said Rogers. Lisa says she wants to encourage other parents to get involved and help.

The process of becoming a foster parent takes about 30 to 60 days to complete. Parents we talked with say it's an incredibly rewarding experience. "It's super rewarding. It's one of the best things you can do I think to help people in your community," said Rogers. "To see them go home but still be a part of their lives now 20 years later, and have them say 'oh my gosh you were the first person who cared about me,' it's amazing," said Stevens.
