Black Rock Solar Teaches Kids About Solar Technology

Posted: Updated:
All of this sunshine helps generate a lot of power across Northern Nevada - and now it's also helping educate our students.

Solar fields are becoming a lot more common in Nevada as they get cheaper and easier to install. But not everyone understands the technology behind them, so Black Rock Solar has started a program for kids to learn all about how it works.

"It's very important to educate kids about solar energy, because...they're going to be the ones who are really going to set a path toward using more renewable energy," says Catherine Leon of Black Rock Solar.

Black Rock Solar visited Clayton Middle School Friday to show a class the science behind solar technology.

The students got to see the effects firsthand when miniature photo-voltaic cells converted sunlight to electricity. Then, they got to try their hands at building their own solar arrays.

Organizers tell us it's important to start early with kids teaching them the impacts of burning fossil fuels and getting them thinking about cleaner sources of energy.

And the kids say, they agree. "I personally think it's really important, because it tells us about our future, and what we can do to make it better," says Sophia Summerhill, Clayton Middle School 7th grader.

Black Rock Solar offers the program free for K-12 classes.
