Police Say Hash Oil Operations on the Rise

Posted: Updated:
Reno Police say Wednesday's explosion on Moran Street was the third such accident from making hash oil in Reno and the fourth in this area. And they say it's becoming a dangerous trend.

"It's not quite as dangerous as meth labs because they involve so many dangerous chemicals," says RPD Officer Tim Broadway. "But this does involve butane and it's volatile. Every time this happens there is alcohol and there is butane around and in the air and we have to call in the bomb squad just to make sure it's safe before anyone goes in."

There have been recent reports of such explosions in Colorado where medical marijuana and recreational marijuana are both legal. And there have been recent incidents in California as well.

What people are doing is distilling marijuana down to pure THC oil.

"That oil is really powerful. One drop is like smoking one joint. They sell it, they use it in edibles and they can use it in vapo pens those e-cigarettes," says Jennifer Snyder with Join Together Northern Nevada. She sees it as a very dangerous trend.

Reno police say they need everyone's help.

"We are asking that if you see a large number of butane bottles say stacked somewhere like outside of a house...you call and report it."
