Reno Arch Goes Blue in Honor of National Law Enforcement Memorial Month

Posted: Updated:
From the City of Reno:

On Thursday, May 1, 2014, the downtown Reno Arch will turn blue at 7 p.m. in honor of fallen law enforcement officers in recognition of National Law Enforcement Memorial Month in May. The Arch will remain blue through June 2.

This will be the fourth year the Arch will turn blue thanks to continued support from Reno businessman Eddie Lorton. This year’s event is also supported by the State of Nevada in recognition of National Foster Care Awareness Month, observed in May as well. Donations and funding cover the labor, equipment and installation of the blue bulbs.

The tradition of turning the arch blue is part of Project Blue Light, which began in 1988 when the mother-in-law of a Philadelphia Police Officer put blue lights in her window during the holiday season to honor her deceased son-in-law who was killed in the line of duty. The color blue is symbolic of peace.

Other local recognition events include:
*    The annual Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony will be held at noon on May 1 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The ceremony will honor the 124 peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty in the State of Nevada since 1861.
*    On Friday, May 2 at Idlewild Park in Reno, the James D. Hoff Peace Officer Memorial ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. The Hoff Memorial was the first state memorial recognizing officers who have died in the line of duty.

National Police Week

National Police Week is May 11-17, 2014 and also pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
