Senate GOP Blocks Dems' Minimum Wage Boost

Posted: Updated:
Senate Republicans have blocked an election-year Democratic bill that would have raised the federal minimum wage.

Wednesday's vote was a defeat for one of President Barack Obama's top economic priorities. And it is sure to echo in this year's congressional elections as both parties grapple over which is truly trying to help American families.

The bill would have gradually increased the current $7.25 hourly minimum wage to $10.10 an hour over 30 months. Democrats say it would have helped millions of low-income families, while Republicans argue that it would have raised employers' costs and reduced jobs.

Democrats believe the wage increase has widespread support and is a winning political issue heading into the November congressional elections.

President Obama underscored the politics by saying that voters can ultimately vote opponents of a minimum wage out of office. "Republicans in Congress have found the time to vote more than 50 times to undermine or repeal the health care bill for millions of working families. Earlier this month they voted for a budget that would give the wealthiest Americans a massive tax cut, while forcing deep cuts to investment that help middle class families but they wont raise wages for millions of working families when 3/4 of Americans support it, that makes no sense," he said Wednesday.

The vote was 54-42 in favor of allowing debate on the measure, six short of the 60 needed to prevail.

Afterwards, Senator Harry Reid tweeted, "Republicans just turned their backs on millions of hardworking Americans who deserve a fair shot. This debate is not over."
