Trauma Intervention Program Seeks Volunteers

Posted: Updated:
Tragedy survivors often have to take back seat to the emergency happening around them. Fires need to be put out, crime scenes secured. That's were Trauma Intervention Program - or TIP volunteers come in.

"I got called out to a scene and there was a large family, they were incredibly emotional, they had just lost a son. I provided emotional support; I was just able to be there with them," says TIP volunteer Chris Dietrich.

Reno police officer Tim Broadway adds, "The TIP volunteers are so knowledgeable, they allow us to do our job as law enforcement officers, while keeping the scene calm for the victim."

The volunteers also help victims understand what investigators are doing and offer resources for recovering from tragedy.

But it's the emotional support that clients say is invaluable. Wittney Walker got help from the volunteers last year. "The services that they offer are paramount to the field that they're in.  That's essential for everybody - young, old, it doesn't matter.."

These services are provided free of charge.  Right now TIP needs new volunteers - they're starting their spring training classes later this week. "No experience is necessary, in fact we prefer you not to bring any of your other training.  We want to train you the way we want you to respond," says Gabrielle Totten.

Chris Dietrich started volunteering for TIP two years ago. He says he's learned a lot from the experience. "Not only do you feel like you're helping the community but you're gaining a lot - you're gaining a second family."

TIP is especially in need of Spanish speaking volunteers. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, have a driver's license and cell phone.

Training begins this Thursday and continues for two weeks in the evenings and on weekends.
