Temple Sinai Hosts Reno Mayoral Candidate Debate

Posted: Updated:
The race for Reno Mayor has many people talking. There's 19 remaining candidates, and some of them took part in a Candidates' Night Monday.

Temple Sinai in Reno hosted the event as 15 of them talked about why they should be the next mayor. Anjeanette Damon, of the Reno Gazette-Journal was the moderator.

The candidates who came out: DeLores Aiazzi, Robert Avery, Marsha Berkbigler, Michael Bertrand, Sean Burke, Tom Fitzgerald, Erik Holland, Eddie Lorton, Ian Pasalich, Ray Pezonella, Larry Pizorno, Chuck Reno, Hillary Schieve, Idora Silver and Ken Stark.

With so many candidates on the ballot, locals thought this forum was helpful for them.

"I don't know any of these candidates," said Ruth Stacy, a Reno resident. "I was able to go through it and eliminate some and kind of more the ones, in my mind, to the top."

The candidates touched on different issues, including the city's budget, medical marijuana dispensaries and the Southeast Connector.

We heard the candidates' thoughts on regionalization or consolidation of fire services between Reno and Washoe County, which they were all pretty much in favor of. They each mentioned how it was important to public safety. It's something most residents we spoke to agree with as well.

"(The answers that stand out) would be those who would understand more the labor contracts, and so forth, that are involved, and the negotiations that will be involved in making this work for all sorts of interest," Stacy said. "You can't cut the people who are putting the fires out because you have contracts involved."

The next major issue was on how to tackle the city's debt. Every candidate had different ideas, from prioritizing spending to selling vacant properties.

"The emphasis that there are a lot of properties that have been purchased by the city over the years, either for not paying property taxes or whatever the reason, it seems odd they just sit on them," said Reno resident, Robert Broili.

"Joint-venture or give development credit," said Bruce Bacon, a south Reno resident. "Or, make it easier for the private-sector to come in and their these eyesores off the public street."

If you want to get a better look at the candidates yourself, the Reno Gazette-Journal and KNPB Channel 5 will host another forum Tuesday night. It starts at 6:30 p.m. inside the Jot Travis student building on the University of Nevada campus. It'll also be streamed live on RGJ.com. The 15 who came out, along with Chad Dehne', are expected to take part.
