Law Enforcement to Target Dangerous Drivers in Northestern Nevada

Posted: Updated:
Several of Nevada’s law enforcement agencies will be Joining Forces and focus their attention on speeders in the northeastern region of the state between April 27 and May 10.

In 2012, of the 258 deaths on our state’s roads, 100 lives were lost due to speeding, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The death toll related to speeding increased by 24 from the previous year.

The general perception is that motorists can safely travel 10 mph over the speed limit without being ticketed. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said that is not the case. “You can be pulled over because the law states the speed limit is the speed limit,” Hixson said. “One mile over constitutes a violation of the law and you can be stopped.”

Speeding not only affects drivers involved in crashes or cited for their infractions, it also costs taxpayers money. NHTSA’s analysis showed the economic ramifications due to speed-related crashes averaged about $40 billion a year.
