Man Arrested for Strangling Wife, Child Endangerment

Sparks Police arrested a man after they say he strangled his wife at the Sparks Marina then tried to run from them, forcing his 11-year-old son to join.

According to police, around 4:30 Sunday morning, they responded to a report of a woman screaming for help in the 300 block of Harbour Cove, just north of the Sparks Marina. Officer's found the victim and learned her husband, 32-year-old Joel Hernandez-Santos, had strangled her and tackled her to the ground.

They say a witness saw Hernandez-Santos leaving the area with his and the victim's 11-year-old son. They say the son had run to get help, but Hernandez-Santos chased after him and caught him. They say for nearly an hour, Hernandez-Santos attempted to run from officers, forcing his son to jump fences and hide, physically not letting him escape. Police say the boy suffered minor injuries during this time.

Around 5:20 a.m. Police found Hernandez-Santos with his son in the 800 block of Nichols Boulevard, which is a little more than 1/2 a mile away from the scene of the assault. They say he had a stolen gun on him and that he is prohibited from carrying any firearms.

Hernandez-Santos was booked into the Washoe County Jail on charges of domestic strangulation, domestic battery, child abuse, child endangerment, false imprisonment to avoid arrest, a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property. His total bail topped $100,000.
