Drug Round Up Day

Drug Round Up Day

Saturday across the nation local law enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and local organizations teamed up to keep prescription drugs off the street, and that was no different here in Northern Nevada.

Some estimate that a few hundred thousand prescription tabs were picked up at 7 different areas here in Reno and Sparks.

"Maybe 20, or 30 thousand pills (will) come in here today which is great," said Stacy Ward Reno Police Drug Abuse Prevention Coordinator. "That's that many fewer pills that are not out there on the streets that nobody could abuse or overdose on."

Once all of the medicine is counted it goes into large bags which will then be taken to the D.E.A, where it  will be burned.
According to Ward, in Washoe County, there have been several hundred deaths related to overdosing within the last few years. She says these drugs are also susceptible abuse, and as accidental poisonings.

Also, don't throw away, or flush your old medicine, as it can make it's way into the water system.

"I'm just getting drugs from around the house and donating them and have them properly disposed of," said Craig Bell.

"We cleaned out my parent's house and we got all of the prescription pills out of the house, and we're happy about that," said Sheri Gaskill.

If you missed Saturday's round up,  you can always turn the old prescriptions in at Reno and Sparks Police Departments and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
