The Carson City Fire Department is presenting the Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month Kickoff, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, May 3 at Mills Park. The event will promote this year’s wildfire awareness message, “Prepare Your Home For Wildfire,” encouraging residents to better prepare their homes and properties now to survive future wildfires.

The event will provide an opportunity to meet local firefighters, visit information booths, meet Smokey Bear and Sparky the fire dog, explore helicopters and fire engines, play games, win prizes and more. A representative from Governor Sandoval’s Office will read the state’s Wildfire Awareness Month Proclamation as part of the kickoff celebrations.

“We’re looking forward to using this fun event to encourage local residents to prepare their homes for wildfire,” said Stacey Giomi, Carson City Fire Department fire chief. “Event attendees will have an opportunity to meet their local firefighters as well as representatives from their state and federal fire agencies.”

Giomi also noted that this event is taking place on the first National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month is a collaborative effort by your local, state and federal firefighting agencies, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and many others. For more information on the Kickoff, contact Rodd Rummel at 775-887-2210; to learn more about Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month, visit www.LivingWithFire.info, or contact Sonya Sistare at University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, sistares@unce.unr.edu or 775-336-0271.
