Marijuana Supporters Move to Broaden its Legality in Nevada

Posted: Updated:
Those who support the use of marijuana here in the Silver State have filed a petition to make legal to use it not only for medicinal purposes but for recreational use as well.

And even those who have opposed its use here altogether say that public opinion may have changed enough to see that happen. "Look, we've been here before," said Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick today. "This is the 5th, the 6th, maybe the 7th time we've seen them trying to get it legalized here for recreational use and so here we are yet again."

Gammick challenges its medicinal use saying neither the FDA nor the AMA have actually put out reports saying it has appropriate use as a drug for sick people and he says that it is still a schedule one drug and selling it is against federal law.

But does he think it could pass this time? "Years ago I would have said absolutely not," he says. "But now so many liberals have moved into the state and public opinion has changed so I wouldn't bet on it."

Meantime, Shane Smith is banking on that change in public opinion. Smith owns Elements Cannabis Center in northwest Reno. He deals in CBD oil products and in medicinal marijuana cards.

"Business is good," he says. "We see about 10 people for CBD a day. Everyone wants to be ready for when they do open dispensaries here."

The state is currently working the application process for those dispensaries. They expect to take applications for them later this summer.  The state is allowing 40 of them in Clark County and 10 in Washoe County.
