The Nevada Highway Patrol has one man behind bars Wednesday night after law enforcement saw him firing a weapon out of a vehicle.

Around 8 p.m., probation officers say they actually saw the driver of a silver car shooting out of the window in front of them in the northbound lanes of Interstate-580, near the Mill Street exit. The officers then followed the car to the Food Mart on Kietzke Lane in Reno.

"With a multi-collaborative effort, we were able to take the driver and the two passengers to custody without incident," said Sgt. Mike Edgell with the Nevada Highway Patrol. "Nobody got hurt. No force was used. No shots were fired from the subject or any of the law enforcement officers."

NHP says there were two men and a woman inside the silver car. Sgt. Edgell told Channel 2 News the driver, 37-year-old Winston Sam was arrested and taken to the Washoe County Jail while the other two were later let go.

When they searched the vehicle, Edgell says they found two firearms -- one was a semi-automatic handgun and the other was an assault rifle. Police say they're still trying to figure out why the shots were fired in the first place.

"At this point, it's still under investigation," Edgell said. "We do not know who they were shooting at, if they were shooting at anybody, what exactly was fired."

Police are also trying to figure out if drugs or alcohol were involved.
