From the City of Reno:

Reno Police officers will trade their handcuffs for menus and serving trays Thursday when they begin waiting tables and seeking "tips" at Applebee's Grill and Bar at 4805 Kietzke Lane  Reno, NV  to raise donations for Special Olympics.

The annual "Tip-A-Cop" program at Applebee's is a unique way for Reno Law Enforcement Officers and the Restaurant employees to join together in a fun way to raise donations for Special Olympics. Numerous Reno Police Officers will be involved in the charitable event by waiting tables during the lunch, 11:00 a.m.-3 p.m.; and dinner 5-9 p.m. at Applebee's.

During the course of the customer's meal, they will partner with the regular restaurant staff to visit with the customers, talk about Special Olympics and solicit tax deductible "tips" as donations for the program.

Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for people with intellectual disabilities through a number of initiatives that include athlete-leadership programs, the Global Athlete Congress, family leadership and support, the Healthy Athletes program, research, schools and youth, the Special Olympics World Games and other programs. Law Enforcement Officers statewide participate in the program.

The tax-deductible donations for Special Olympics through "Tip-A-Cop" are not meant to replace gratuities for the hardworking restaurant servers who will team with the Reno officers during the lunch and dinner periods.
