TMCC Hosts 'Be the Match' Donor Registration Drive

Posted: Updated:
You can help save a life for free this week at Truckee Meadows Community College. The "Be the Match" organization is hosting a donor registration drive for people willing to donate bone marrow to help save lives.

Organizers say the huge majority of people who need transplants don't have donors in their families who can help. So they have to turn to the donor registry. "There's 70% of them that are just sitting, waiting, hoping, really having a hard time being newly diagnosed, and then having the worries of, is there someone really out there that will be available to give the transplant," says Sarah Atkinson, TMCC Nursing Association.

Organizers say there's a big misconception that donating bone marrow is extremely painful, but the process has changed with technology. Now they say most of the time it is basically the same process as donating blood platelets. It takes just a few hours with very little recovery time needed and it can save a life.

We met two sisters who experienced that firsthand.

"I was lucky enough to have a match, a perfect match. I know a lot of people that don't," says Jane Wirth, transplant Recipient.

"It was the most rewarding experience I've ever had in my life. I mean, to be able to do that, she wouldn't be here hanging out with me," says Jabrila Via, bone marrow donor.

The "Be the Match" event continues Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm at the TMCC Student Center. Donor candidates just have to fill out some paperwork and give a cheek swab.
