Jury Finds Man Guilty in 1980 South Lake Tahoe Murder

Posted: Updated:
A Placerville jury has found a man guilty of murdering a teenager in 1980. The 4 men 8 women jury deliberated for less than two hours before finding Andrew Sanford guilty.

Prosecutors say Sanford killed 16-year-old Richard Swanson at a South Lake Tahoe gas station during Swanson's graveyard shift. Swanson had been beaten, wrapped in duct tape and left to suffocate and die.

South Lake Tahoe officers say they collected the duct tape used on Swanson that later provided DNA evidence linking the then 19-year-old Sanford to the crime.

Nearly 30 years later, Sanford was arrested for domestic violence in Sacramento County. At that time his DNA sample was taken and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). In January 2011, CODIS matched Sanford's DNA to the DNA found on the duct tape.

Sanford was arrested on March 28, 2012 and charged with first degree murder.

El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson says, “Nothing can bring their son Richard back, but it is my hope that Richard’s mother and father may find some peace knowing the person responsible for their son’s death is finally being held responsible for his actions”.

Swanson will be sentenced June 16th.
