Aces Downed as Rally Falls Short in Fresno

Fresno, Calif.— Two big innings were enough for the Fresno Grizzlies in a 6-4 win over the Reno Aces Monday night at Chukchansi Park.

Diamondbacks’ top prospect Archie Bradley got off to a good start in the first inning as he picked up a pair of strikeouts but Fresno got to him in the second.

The Grizzlies batted around and took a 3-0 lead on four hits in the frame. It started with a lead-off single by Chris Dominguez, who moved to second on Alfredo Marte’s fielding error. Two batter later, Tyler Colvin started the scoring with a run-scoring single.

Bradley walked the next batter and hit the following. It came back to hurt as Gary Brown and Joe Panik collected back-to-back RBI singles.

The Aces staged a mini-comeback when Nick Evans hit his team-leading fifth homer of the year in the top of the sixth. Evans finished the night 2-for-3 with three RBI. He’s hitting .340 and leads the team with 13 RBI.

Fresno upped their lead to 6-2 in the bottom half of the inning. Just like he did in the third, Fresno’s Tony Abreu walked and came around to score a run on Joe Panik’s second RBI single of the night. Juan Perez followed with a 2-run base hit to give the Grizzlies a four-run cushion.

Reno had another comeback attempt in the eighth inning when they plated a pair to make it 6-4. Ender Inciarte, Didi Gregorius and Marte all reached to start the inning. After Mike Jacobs struck out, Nick Evans delivered Inciarte with a sacrifice fly. Roger Kieschnick made it a two-run game with an infield single to score Gregorius. The comeback came to a halt when pinch-hitter Blake Lalli’s sinking line drive to right was caught on the run by Perez.

Pinch-hitter Andy Marte singled with one out in the ninth and went to third on Gregorius’ double. Grizzlies’ closer Heath Hembree shut the door when he struck out Alfredo Marte to end the game.

Reno will try to win the series Tuesday in the finale. They send right-hander Bo Schultz (1-2, 3.78) to the mound against Fresno right-hander Chris Heston (1-1, 4.60). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
