Drivers Soon to be Connected Via "Carplay"

Posted: Updated:

Wouldn't it be nice if your car and phone talked to each other? Well pretty soon some vehicles will offer that feature to iPhone users…and Android may not be far behind.

Plug in your iPhone, and welcome to Carplay. Your phone, music, maps and text messaging-appear on a built in display, making it easier for you to focus on the road.

Mercedes says you can command your phone to use apps by talking to Siri, or you can use the controller. They plan to offer Carplay in its c-class vehicles by the end of the year.

And other companies are plugging in. Volvo's demo unit allows you to use a touch screen or press a button on your steering wheel to make your next move. As CNET Senior Editor Wayne Cunningham put it, "A driver can interact more safely with their phone."

Cunningham says Google is working with other car companies to create a similar system for Android customers: "Automakers don't want to be stuck with one type of phone. They don't want to just sell to iPhone users."

Ferrari, Honda and Hyundai also plan to offer Apple's Carplay in some models later this year. That could be music to the ears of iPhone users, giving them one more way to stay connected in their cars. 13 other companies including Ford, Nissan and Toyota have also committed to using Carplay in the future.
