Prosecutors Seek Arrest Warrant for Ferry Captain

Posted: Updated:

The captain of a sunken South Korean ferry -- and two other crew members -- could be facing prosecution.

Authorities have asked a court to issue arrest warrants for the three, in the disaster that may have claimed about 300 lives.

The investigation into the sinking is focusing on a sharp turn the ferry took just before it began listing. And investigators want to know if more lives could have been saved by a quicker evacuation order from the captain.

Some 270 people are missing and feared dead. The official death toll is 28.

Meanwhile, Police in South Korea say the body of a high school vice principal who was rescued from a sinking ferry on Wednesday has been found hanging from a tree -- and that he left a suicide note saying he felt guilty for being alive while more than 200 students were missing.

The body of the vice principal was found on the island of Jindo. It's near the site of the sinking, and it's where survivors have been housed.

He was the leader of a group of 325 students traveling on the ship on a school excursion.  (AP)
