Nevada's Unemployment Rate Stays at 8.5%

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says the state's unemployment rate stayed at a seasonally-adjusted rate of 8.5% for the month of March.

That number is down from 10.2% year-over-year, but 117,000 Nevadans are still out of work.

Those numbers do not include rates in metro areas for March.

That data is expected to be released next week.

Nevada Chief Economist Bill Anderson says the state's economy is still moving in the right direction.

Total employment in Nevada is projected to grow by about 61,000 jobs through 2015, a 5.3% increase.

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement regarding the Nevada unemployment figures released earlier today:

"As Nevada's unemployment rate stayed the same for one more month, I remain concerned about the Nevadans who have been looking for employment, but have not yet secured a job.  Earlier this month, the Senate passed a bill that Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and I introduced to extend unemployment insurance benefits for five months to help job-seeking Nevadans cope while they look for a job. I am grateful to Governor Sandoval who urged the House of Representatives to move swiftly on this bill," said Senator Dean Heller. "My goal in Washington continues to be finding solutions that create good policies and get people back to work with jobs that are both secure and pay well. In the meantime, Congress should do the right thing and help those who are facing extremely difficult situations."
