Many Scramble Before Tax Return Deadline

Posted: Updated:

Many locals scrambled to file their taxes before the deadline on midnight, April 16th.

The Internal Revenue Service has already received nearly 100 million tax returns but is expecting about 35 million more by the final day.

So why do many people still wait until the last minute?

"Just procrastinating, just put it off and put it off. I had all my paperwork. I knew I had to get it done. Otherwise, they'd probably send me to jail after tomorrow so, I made an appointment," says Jeffrey Fruchtenicht of Portola, California.

Falyn Flores of Sparks adds, "I have a little one at home. So, household gets busy."

You can imagine, there wasn't much down-time for tax experts Tuesday.

"We've had probably close to 300 to 400 clients come into the office today," said Dena Wiberg, H&R Block Office Manager for the Wells Avenue location.

"We have a lot of people waiting at the last-minute to file taxes," said Miguel Martir, owner of Max Tax, also on Wells Avenue. "Especially the people that have to pay, and I can tell you, it's been busy in here all day long."

According to the IRS, about 65% of filers get some sort of refund. For those who end up owing, the IRS does provide a number of options, including filing an extension.

"It's important, especially for people that have to pay, for them to not be penalized or start paying interest, and all that stuff from the IRS," Martir said.

"So, we ask you to file an extension because it'll help waive that penalty, but it's doesn't help waive the interest on the fees," Wiberg said.

People who filed for an extension will give them until October 15th.
