Aces Release

The Reno Aces came up short in a bid for their first series win of 2014. Looking to take three of four from the El Paso Chihuahuas, Reno dropped the series finale, 5-3, at Kino Stadium in Tucson.

Veteran Randy Wolf started for the Aces after being added to the roster a few hours before first pitch. The lefty retired the first six batters he faced but ran into trouble in the third. After a lead-off walk issued to Adam Moore, El Paso's shortstop Alberto Gonzalez doubled to put runners at second and third.

Wolf came back to strike out the pitcher Juan Oramas and then got a fielder's choice to cut down Moore at the plate. Wolf was nearly out of the jam but Brooks Conrad laced a two-run double to left to give El Paso a 2-0 lead. Kyle Blanks and Jeff Francoeur followed with run-scoring hits to open a 4-0 lead.

It remained 4-0 until Alfredo Marte got the Aces on the board with a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Despite getting another RBI from Marte in the eighth inning on a base hit to score Ender Inciarte, the Aces left the bases loaded in a chance to get back into the game.

El Paso tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Kyle Blanks' RBI single. Reno threatened again when they trimmed the lead to two on Didi Gregorius' RBI fielder's choice but Mike Jacobs struck out to end the game with two runners on.

Wolf was tagged with the loss and Oramas got his first win of the season.

The Aces return home for a four-game series against Las Vegas set to begin Tuesday. Right-hander Charles Brewer (1-1, 2.45) starts for Reno against Las Vegas right-hander Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.82). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
