DMV, Organ Transplant Recipients Encourage Donation

Posted: Updated:

Officials with the Department of Motor Vehicles teamed up with organ transplant recipients to encourage people to volunteer to become organ donors - when getting their driver's licenses.

"By checking that box here at the Department of Motor Vehicles it makes my job easier because I can tell a family your loved one made this final wish and your job is to honor that wish," says John Lilley of the California Transplant Donor Network.

Studies show the families of loved ones who donate organs find it easier to find closure in their loss.

One man who received a liver transplant from an organ donor said he's seen that firsthand.

"I had the honor of receiving some letters from the family of the person that passed and it was very meanful to me because not only were we a match organ wise but we were also a match personality wise," says liver recipient Steve Flores.

One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation, and help the lives of up to 50 through tissue donation.
