The Lyon County Sheriff's Office recently acquired a Mine Resistant Ambush Proof (MRAP) vehicle from the federal government, which is a tool for some of the toughest situations law enforcement may encounter.

The MRAP can be used in situations where a gunman is armed with a high-powered rifle, or any other dangerous situation the Lyon County SWAT Team may encounter.

The MRAP was received for free from the Federal Government through the 1033 program. Lt. Abel Ortiz and other members of the SWAT Team spent over eight months dealing with the paperwork and providing information to acquire the vehicle. After getting the approval to obtain the vehicle, Undersheriff Albert Torres approved the money from Narcotics seizures to ship the 47,000 pound vehicle from Sealy, Texas to Yerington. The only cost to the county will be to add it to the fleet of vehicles it already has.

The 350-horsepower surplus U.S. Army vehicle has about 17,000 miles on it. The passenger compartment is bulletproof and designed to withstand a mine blast with a v-shaped undercarriage. It features a positively charged atmosphere inside, allowing to safely travel into areas with a chemical cloud or heavy smoke. It's also heat-resistant and the tires can't be punctured. The vehicle can hold up to 10 people, but only a select few on the SWAT Team will be allowed to drive it, which requires training.

It will probably debut in this year's Lyon County Fair and Rodeo Parade in August.
